How can I electrify my Valentine’s Day?
This Valentine’s Day, if you’re looking to generate a little family fun that’s electric, plan to check out these fun science activity experiments you can try with the whole family!
1. Static Electricity Flying Cupids
When you think of Valentine’s Day, images of chubby cherubs flying through the air is one of the first things that comes to mind. Grab the kids and make some Cupids fly with static electricity! You’ll need:
- Tissue paper
- Markers
- Scissors
- Balloons
- Paper Cupid cut-out
- Wool, flannel, fleece, or just your own hair!
Draw Cupid on a piece of tissue paper, then rub an inflated balloon on your hair or some fabric for about 10 seconds. Hold the balloon over the tissue Cupid and watch him fly thanks to the static electricity!
2. Light-Up Circuit Valentines
Light up someone special’s life with these heart-shaped messages. Press down on the switch to complete the circuit and show just how much they complete your heart as well! You’ll need:
- Electric paint pen
- 5 mm LED lights
- Pin contact coin cell batteries
- Card stock (romantic colors)
- Push pin
Draw your heart with a message in the middle on the card and cut it out, keeping a tab near the bottom to close the eventual circuit. Use the push pin to insert the LED near the top, and add the battery near the bottom. Using the electric paint pen, draw a continuous line around the heart, keeping a space open for the switch down the bottom. Fill in the switch with the electric paint on the tab and let it dry. Fold the tab over and press down to complete the circuit and you’re good to go!
3. Candy Hearts Experiment
Have a bunch of candy hearts leftover? Grab the kids and get ready for some science! Let the kids see what happens when you put these candies in a variety of liquids. You’ll need:
- Jars
- Liquids of your choice (water, vinegar, soda, corn syrup, juice, etc)
- Candy hearts
Fill each jar with a different type of liquid and ask the kids what they think will happen once the candy hearts go in. Will they dissolve? Will they fizzle? Will the liquid change color? Once you’ve done that, put the hearts in and record the results. How close did you get to the correct answer? The results may be surprising!
